I am unable to check my mail right now… Gmail times out.

Got caught in a rainstorm along the Malecon walking home late yesterday afternoon… there are few things more beautiful than a rainy, sunny sky along the Malecon.

I landed in Havana on Saturday evening, in a sauna of a night. The casa I was staying at was full, so the owner sent me to his neighbor downstairs.

I spent Sunday walking along the Malecon (the long main street along the sea) and yesterday at the Universidad de la Habana.

I’m here for another day then I’m off to Matanzas.

Cheers for now,

s.

My flight to Havana leaves in just under 6 hours. I’m packing some last-minute items, checking the bike over one last time, and realizing that I’m almost certainly well over the max weight allowance for the airline.

More importantly, my backpack and bike panier alone have a combined weight of close to 50 lbs, more than I’ve been used to biking with. I’m obsessively going over each and every item, removing unnecessary packaging, trying to slim it down as if I was stripping a car for street racing.

I’ll be in Havana until maybe Thursday or Friday, so I’ll try to post as much as I can from there since I suspect it will only get more difficult as I get further East.

IconRough Gmap pedometer route

Well it’s pretty useless since gmap has no data on Cuba maps, but here’s a rough estimate on the bicycle route I’m planning to take (city-to-city) from Havana to the Oriente, then back through Havana to Pinar del Rio. 2 months, ~2153KM (closer to 2500km due to roads, etc), mountains in the east.

It looks a lot scarier on Gmap actually…
