Cubita Coffee in Montreal supermarkets

Although authentic Cubita Coffee has been available online and from certain specialty shops in Canada for a while now, over the past few weeks I’ve been seeing it crop up in pretty much every supermarket that I’ve been to in the Montreal area. At my local IGA supermarket, I saw a nice display with both the standard, ground Cuban dark roast, and a new “instant” coffee made from beans that do not come from Cuba, but from other countries such as Ecuador.
I just bought a package of each and tried it out - as expected, the standard dark roast is fantastic. Cubita dark roast is one of my favorite coffees in the world, and out of my stove-top espresso maker it tastes every bit the same as the all-important cafecitos I’d have nearly every morning whenever I’d be in Cuba. I haven’t yet made any cortadito or cafe con leche from this, but I have no reason to doubt that it’ll be just as good.
The “instant” coffee, on the other hand, was a disappointment. I’ve never been a fan of instant coffee, and this was no exception, unsurprisingly. Not only is it not made with actual Cuban beans, but it has a sort of sulfite afterfeeling which left me feeling noxious.
So, if you live in Montreal (or anywhere else in Canada, probably), and are looking for a change in pace from the usual espresso you get, stop by your local grocer and pick up a package - it’s really good coffee.

Oh my god! I was just going to post about this on my blog. I got back from Cuba (again) about a month a go and brought a couple of kilos of Cubita… when I went to IGA on Saturday morning I found some! I was so damned happy I could have cried!
Woohoo! And yes the cafe con leche is amazing with this IGA bought Cuban coffee!
Hi Sickboy,
Glad we don’t have do bring this back with us anymore - I’m a happy camper now that we can find this anywhere!
Nice post. Thank you for the info. Keep it up.
Hey guys. A company in montreal has began to import coffee directly from cubita and the prices are amazing. Drop me a line for the info, I wont post the info here because i dont know if it’s allowed. The coffee is the same as you get in Cuba, its the dark roast, from 115g, 230g, 460g, 1kg ground and 1kg beans.
Thanks and happy holidays

Thanks for the info. Is there any way to have some of that sent to me here in the US?
That would probably be illegal! Maybe you can smuggle some across the border though.
You are right… the cubitan coffee is one of the best worldwide. I brought some packages in 2007 on my cuba vacation. But it is impossible to buy cubitan in europe…
That sounds to me like the Yankee who tried to translate literally the Spanish expression “Entre, y tome un asiento.”
It came out like “Between, and drink a chair.”
Anyone know if you can get Bucanero here in Canada? I’ve been craving it since I came back from Cuba in September….
Hey all,
The grocery store “PA” located downtown stocks Cubita coffee in ground and bean form.

cubita dark is the best. i get it whenever im anywhere but here in the states heheheh. europe, canada, and mexico. if your in the US i have bought it from a canadian cigar shop and had it shipped i just had them take the beans out of the bag and put it in a ziplock bag and send it. it’s nice to know that it’s in the super markets in canada now, it will be cheaper and i can have my monreal friends pick it up and ship it to me.

Hola,
Podría ayudarme contestando a algunas preguntas?
gracías

This is certainly great news, but I am not living in Montreal. However, I have seen it in a few shops in my hometown. It’s the best coffee in the world, even better than Costa Rican coffee. Every time I visit Cuba, I order Cubita coffee and always take as much as I can home with me. There’s nothing better than Cubita with a little sugar and steamed milk.
